When relationship challenges arise, finding the right support can feel overwhelming. As a relationship coach with over 30 years of licensed counseling experience, I’ve talked with many couples about this process. Taking the first step toward getting relationship help shows courage and a commitment to your partnership.
Good Marriages Don’t Just Happen – Relationships Need Attention
Many couples wait two or more years after problems begin before they seek help. I’ve heard people say, “We’re not THAT bad!” when asked if they’ve considered a relationship coach or marriage counselor to help sort out the tensions in their marriage. The good news? It’s never too late to start untangling the knots in your marriage and creating deeper intimacy.
Would you drive your car 100,000 miles without an oil change or maintenance? Of course not! Yet too many couples believe that they shouldn’t have to work on their relationship if they love each other. I’m a firm believer that a growth mindset is one of the secrets of couples who stay in love for decades.
Questions To Ask A Relationship Coach Or Marriage Counselor
If you’re considering relationship coaching, it’s a good idea to interview several relationship coaches and/or marriage counselors to find the one who’s right for you.
Below are good questions to ask a coach or counselor:
- What specific experience and training do you have working with couples?
- What is your approach to helping couples create lasting change?
- How do you measure progress and success in working with couples?
- Do you offer workshops or resources that help build communication, conflict, or intimacy skills?
- What do you enjoy most about working with couples?
- As Christians (or Jewish, Buddhist, Muslim, etc.), how will our faith values be taken into consideration?
Working Together In Coaching Sessions
As a relationship coach, I bring a unique perspective that combines decades of clinical experience with practical coaching strategies. This integrated approach enables couples to work through current challenges and establish stronger foundations for the future. Sessions are supportive and action-oriented.
In our relationship coaching sessions, here are some potential issues that you might be experiencing that we can address, including:
- How to break through communication barriers that keep you stuck (Do you ever feel as if there are topics that you argue about over and over? Or do you avoid hard conversations, because one or both of you don’t like conflict?)
- How to develop practical conflict resolution skills you can use immediately. (There is a communication tool I teach all my clients. That alone has been a game changer for many couples!)
- How to rebuild trust and emotional connection. (Empathy is the foundation of a healthy relationship. But most of us have not been taught the purpose of emotions, how to name them and learn what they
- How to create shared goals and a vision for your future together. (Having regular vision/goal sessions and reviewing them is one way that keeps couples engaged as a team. True partnership happens when we are pulling in the same direction. Losing sight of the importance of each person’s contribution is how many couples fall into a rut.)
- How to manage life transitions as a team. (Expecting that first baby? Buckle up, buttercup! Every life transition calls for shifting expectations–launching kids, empty nest, retirement, illness are the biggies.)
